Geo-spatial Tactical Decision Aid systems: fuzzy logic for supporting decision making

Posted by simboss on February 20, 2006

This paper has been submitted for review to the Fusion 2006 conference on Data Fusion which will be held in Florence (Italy) in July 2006.

Tactical decision aid systems support the military or civilian operation planning process providing the decisional authorities with a simplified view of the environmental conditions over a theatre of operations. Methods for multisource data fusion and support for disseminating and managing geospatial data are key factors for a successful system implementation.
This paper describes a tactical decision aid system based on fuzzy logic reasoning for data fusion and on current Open Geospatial Consortium specifications for interoperability, data dissemination and geo-spatial services support. Results from system implementation tests during  live exercises are reported and discussed showing the flexibility and reliability of the    proposed architecture. Future directions are provided and discussed as well, including web processing services    context fuzzy reasoning and group decision making.

Supporting Interoperable Geospatial Data Fusion by adopting OGC and ISO TC 211 standards.

Posted by simboss on February 20, 2006

This paper has been submitted for review to the Fusion 2006 conference on Data Fusion which will be held in Florence (Italy) in July 2006.

It does not present any of the work I have been carrying out on Interoperable GeoSpatial Architectures and Service but it rather aims to provide a coherent overview of all the various specifications issued from OGC and ISO to promote standardization in the GIS field.

Collaborative resource allocation in wireless sensor networks.

Posted by simboss on February 1, 2006

This is the abstract of a paper I wrote together with Prof. Marco Caccamo during the time I spent at Real Time System Lab at UIUC for my Masther Thesis.
Traditional real-time resource allocation algorithms assume that the available resources in a system such as total CPU and network bandwidth do not change over time. However, in wireless sensor networks, the amount of available resources on the devices and the communication channel may not be constant for all times: for instance, a node can be turned off in some time intervals to increase its battery lifetime. Since sensor networks have limited network capacity and computational capabilities, it is crucial to optimally assign the available resources among all the active tasks. In this paper, we propose a fast online resource allocation algorithm (CoRAl) to dynamically reconfigure a sensor network whenever a new hot spot occurs (e.g., a new intruder is detected) or a node’s activity changes (i.e., sleep vs. active mode). Our experimental results show that CoRAl provides always near-optimal resource allocation while keeping its online overhead low.

Using WFS plugin to access a Web Feature Service.

Posted by simboss on January 31, 2006

paper describes the work carried out at NURC by Ramona Georgescu.

This document is an investigation on the state and capabilities of WFS datastore inside GeoTools which should allow a developer to fully manipulate features on an OGC compliant WFS server. An extensive evaluation of all the possibility given by the WFS protocol with respect to the GeoTools/GeoServer implementation is given with a set of examples. This work, while being a final product, will probably be subject to improvements and additions.
You may treat this document as you would treat any public domain work: it may be used, changed, copied, or redistributed, with or without permission of the authors, for free or for compensation. An enterprise geospatial application to support expeditionary naval warfare.

Posted by simboss on January 31, 2006

This is a paper I coauthored for the 2005 ESRI users’ conference held in San Diego, California.

It discusses some of the work me my collegues carried out at NURC on interoperable geospatial architecture for supporting on-the-field operations.

It also briefly introduce and discuss core OGC and ISO specifications for design of geospatial architectures, with references to the Geotools and GeoServer open source project I joined in late 2004.
